It’s colder, it’s darker, but taking care of yourself is still such an important thing to do. Self is key throughout the year, but especially important over winter. Here is a list of 7 winter self-care tips I’ve created for you to try this winter!
Yes – everyone’s favourite thing to do is top of the list. The colder weather can make you not want to work out. But, exercising stimulates the release of endorphins which can make you feel less stressed. Also, the brain can release neurotransmitters such as serotonin and this promotes good feelings about yourself (this may be why you feel fantastic after a workout). Working out can vary from weight training, cycling or even going on a long walk. Whatever you like doing, try and do it this winter (don’t let the cold scare you off!).
2) Take Care Of Your Skin
Personally, I think skincare is so vital because it can boost your self-confidence! Our skin is the biggest organ we have as humans, so we must take care of it! Make sure you keep your skin hydrated by using a moisturiser (maybe a thicker one since it’s winter). Put on a jumper to keep warm to avoid using heating or have shorter showers, because heat especially can dry out your skin. Remember to drink your water to keep your body hydrated, and don’t forget your sunscreen!
3) Have Lots Of Lights
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is when you have signs and symptoms of depression which correlates with the changing season. The lack of sunlight can really get you down and light therapy is a way to keep you happier. I recently put up fairy lights in my house and it just makes me feel so much better about how quick it gets dark nowadays. It sort of reminds me that winter won’t last for long and the light of spring will be upon soon. If you’re finding it hard to deal with SAD and it’s affecting a lot of aspects of your life, please go see your doctor about it.
4) Keep Warm
It’s so nice to keep warm in the winter months. Wearing big thick jumpers and fluffy socks is a great way to feel super cosy. Drink lots of warm drinks including soup which will help you stay nice and toasty! It may even be a good idea to make your own soup from scratch too, could be a lovely evening thing to do.
5) Stay Hydrated
I know all the hot chocolate and pumpkin spiced lattes are tempting but don’t forget plain old water. I know I’ve already mentioned this, but it’s so important. You still need your 2 litres of water per day, so please do try to fit this into your daily routine. Your body and skin will thank you for it!
6) Have Your Own Medicine Kit
Of course, the health care professional in me thinks this one deserves to be on the list. Cold and flu have a higher prevalence this time of year, and those viruses take no prisoners! Try to keep a stash of medicines you need when you start to feel ill. If you have your kit already made up, you’ll be more prepared to get better quicker!
7) Finish That Book You’ve Wanted To For Ages
Snuggling up in bed and reading is one of my favourite activities. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I tend to avoid going outside especially when it’s super cold or raining. Why not be selfish and get caught up in that book you’ve been reading or audiobook you’ve been listening too?
So there you go, those are my 7 winter self-care tips – why don’t you give one a go and let me know if it helps.
